REOG PONOROGO
Reog Ponorogo is a very spectacular dance. Dancers wear bright, colorful costumes and are accompanied by gamelan music. The dancers always perform it out in the open such as in a town square. Reog dates back to the Hindu period in East Java. The story is related to the legends of Ponorogo Kingdom about 70 km south east of Solo.
The central figure of this dance is the Lion King – Singa barong. The dancer wears a mask of the lion and carries a large peacock feather fan on top of the mask. The mask is called Topeng Dadak Merak. It can weigh up to 50 kg. The dancer has to use his teeth to hold the mask from inside the mask. A strong set of teeth and a strong neck are essential. Sometimes he has to demonstrate his skill and strength by carrying another masked dancer on top of him and still dance with energetic and amazing movements.
Another important characteristic is Bujangga Anom. Together with Singa Barong they are accompanied by one or more masked clowns/acrobats. There are also a number of hobby horse dancers, who are said to represent the troops of Bujangga Anom. One of the unique features of the Reog dance is that the hobbyhorse dancers are young boys dressed as women.

THE CRYING STONE
One upon a time, there was a beautiful girl who lived in a village. She was very lazy. It made her mother sad. One day her mother took her to the market. “That is a good idea,” the girl said. “But you must walk behind me,” the girl said. Her mother said sadly, “OK, my dear.” The mother walked behind her daughter carrying a basket.
The girl and her mother looked very different. The girl wore a beautiful dress but her mother wore an ugly one. Along the street people asked the girl, Is she your mother ?” “No, she isn’t. She is my slave,” the girl replied. It happened again and again. It hurt her mother. She prayed to God, “Oh, give a lesson to this naughty daughter.” Suddenly the sky became dark and the girl turned into stone from her leg up to her head. She cried and asked her mother for help but it was too late. Her entire body became stone. But from the eyes the tears always come down. People called it the Crying Stone.
