PUTRI MONONDEAGA

                                             PUTRI MONONDEAGA (Story telling)

A long time ago, in the middle of a jungle in South Sulawesi, there lived a couple of a husband and a wife. They were Abo Mamongkuroit and Putri Monondeaga. They lived happily because they loved each other.
One day Abo decided to wander off somewhere to earn a living in order that their life would be better. Abo asked a permission to his wife and she allowed him to leave.
“But Honey, Please don’t take too long. I am afraid of living alone.” asked Monondeaga.
“Don’t worry my dear wife, soon after I make enough money I will be back home.”
Abo was about to leave and his wife provided him with rice and boiled eggs. Though he found leaving his beautiful wife a real wrench, he had to begin his adventure.
Some time later, after his husband’sgoing, there came Tulap, a human-eating greedy giant, who lived around the jungle. Monondeaga was afraid to see Tulap, but Tulap was calm and said:” Don’t be afraid, Monondeaga! I will not eat you.”
Monondeaga was confused and thought how to get away from Tulap. Tulap said loudly,”Hey, Deaga. You will  be glad to live in my house.” persuaded Tulap. However Deaga had an idea to hold Tulap’s cruel intention. “Today, don’t take me with you because I will wash my hair. You’d better pick me up tomorrow.”
Without taking time, Tulap immediately left with a full hope that he could get Deaga the next day. Meanwhile, Deaga was still thinking about a reason she would tell Tulap. “If only my husband were here, it would not happen,” complained Deaga in the heart. She could not sleep the whole night, she just thought about what would happen to her.
The next day as dusk fell, Tulap appeared in front of Deaga’s house. While grinning, Tulap approached Deaga. Deaga did not lose her mind to make an excuse,”Hey, Tulap. How about taking me tomorrow because I haven’t taken a bath.” At first Tulap did not want to listen her excuse, but Deaga kept persuading him. Finally Tulap accepted it and went home.
Some excuses were given to Tulap by Deaga just to extend the time to wait until his husband returned home. However, as days passed by, his husband had not come back from his wanderings. One morning, when Deaga was sitting and comtemplating about her life, suddenly Tulap came. Deaga was shocked to see Tulap since she was running out of excuses. She was really afraid, whereas Tulap was no longer patient.
Tulap snapped,” Now. What excuse will you say? Follow me!”
Deaga started to tremble,”Today my life will end. The greedy giant want to swallow me.” Said Deaga to herself.
When Deaga was thinking about her fate, she was shocked by Tulap’s loude voice. “Wait a moment, Tulap. I want to comb my hair and change my clothes first,” persuaded Deaga to calm Tulap down. After getting dressed, Deaga went out of her house. A few moments later, Tulap carried Deaga to his house. As soon as arriving at his house, he put Deaga in an iron cage under his house.
As long as she had been confined in Tulap’s house, Deaga was getting thinner and thinner and her beauty was fading away. Every day, she just thought what her fate would be. She also thought about what would happen if her husband returned and did not find her at home. Her husband would be very sad and tried to look for her. Then, if he were able to find her at Tulap’s home, he would be very angry and there would happen a terrible thing.
After two weeks of Abo’s wanderings, he went home. While bringing gifts and money for his lovely wife. Abo arrived in his house. He called his wife but he got no answer.  He wondered aboutwhere Mondeaga went. His mind was full of various prejudices. Maybe his wife was devoured by a wild animal, or wiped by the stream of a river. He tried to search the traces of his wife around his house and the river nearby but he found nothing. The next day he provided food and clothing supply to begin a searching.
Abo set off to find his wife and walked indefatigably through the jungle. Whoever he found he asked whether they knew where his wife was. Abo continued his journey, and at last he suspected Tulap’s big house. Abo was welcomed by Tulap’s smirk which made Abo’s suspicion get bigger.
Tulap showed his arrogancy and challenged Abo to pit their tibias. This challange was accepted by Abo and both of them went down to the yard.
As the tibia fighting commenced, Tulap started to attack. Some attacks could be blocked by Abo. Surprisingly, it was not Abo who fell to the ground because of Tulap’s attacks but instead Tulap suffered a defeat. “Hey, Tulap.”screamed Abo. “You should give up because I am stronger than you. My strength exceeds yours and you are powerless.”
At that time, Tulap thought to be defensive againsts Abo’s attacks. In turn, Abo started the attack to Tulap. Unfortunately, Tulap -the jungle giant- was thrown up to a tall tree and floundered like a dying chicken. At last he was dead. Seeing this occurance, Tulap’s wife directly took a sharp knife to attack Abo. But, what happened then? Tulap’s wife was also hit by Abo’s death blow and thrown faraway. It caused her to meet death.
After defeating his enemies, Abo saw that there were a lot of people inside the cage under Tulap’s house who would become Tulap’s daily meals. Abo’s wife was seen inside the cage. Soon he opened the cage and released the people to get back to their homes and villages. He hugged his wife and took her home. Since then they lived happily ever after and nobody dared to harm them anymore.
