Story Telling

JOKO DOLOG

One day, Pangeran (Pangeran) Situbondo, the son of Adipati (Duke) Cakraningrat of Madura, with his two guardians named Gajah Seta and Gajah Menggala sailed to Kadipaten Surabaya. He was welcomed by Adipati Jayengrana.
“Excuse me, Pangeran Situbanda. Why do you intend to visit Surabaya?” asked Adipati Jayengrana to Pangeran Situbanda.
“I am sorry, uncle. The purpose of my visit here is to express my long pent-up wish.”
“What wish is that, Pangeran?”
“It’s been a long time I have a wish to propose marriage to Purbawati, Uncle.”
After listening to Pangeran Situbanda’s explanation,  Adipati Jayanegara could not make a decision himself.. Then Adipati invited her daughter, Dewi Purbawati. He told her what Pangeran Situbanda wished.
Actually, Dewi Purbawati disliked Pangeran from Madura. There was no other way for Dewi Purbawati, except refusing it euphemistically. Then Dewi Purbawati made a request which was a form of subtle refusal to Pangeran Situbanda’s wish. She wanted Pangeran Situbanda to clear Surabaya jungle into a campong for their children and grandchildren if he wanted to marry her. Pangeran Situbanda promised to fulfil it though it was not an easy job.
In Kadipaten Surabaya, there was a guest from Kadipaten Kediri that was Pangeran Jaka Taruna. Because it was a past childhood habit for Pangeran Jaka Taruna to play in Kadipaten Surabaya, he soon went to the Dewi Purbawati’s house. Between Dewi Purbawati and Pangeran Jaka Taruna, there was long lasting love.
In the keputren park,  Pangeran Jaka Taruna saw Dewi Purbawati, his sweetheart, daydreaming. Knowing that Pangeran Jaka Taruna was coming, Dewi Purbawati cried before Pangeran Jaka Taruna. Dewi Purbawati asked Pangeran Jaka Taruna why he did not propose to marry her because Pangeran Situbanda had told about it to her father. Dewi Purbawati also explained that she announced a “Clearing the jungle contest”. She told that whoever was able to clear Surabaya jungle would marry her.  He decided to join the contest to prove his love to Dewi Purbawati as well as his magic power.
In Surabaya Jungle, Pangeran Situbanda was taking a rest from chopping trees. Suddenly he heard a voice of a man cutting trees from a distance. He immediately looked for where the voice came from. Apparently, the man cutting the trees was Pangeran Jaka Taruna, the son of Adipati Kediri. Pangeran Situbanda asked why Pangeran Jaka Taruna followed him to cut the trees.
Pangeran Jaka Taruna said that he also joined the contest required by Dewi Purbawati. Pangeran Situbanda was angry and ordered Pangeran Jaka Taruna to go home. At last, those two pangerans fought fiercely against each other for the sake of winning Dewi Purbawati. In the fight, Pangeran Jaka Taruna was thrown upward and entangled on a branch of a very tall tree.
Pangeran Jaka Taruna screamed to ask for a help. Pangeran Situbanda left Pangeran Jaka Taruna alone. A young man named Jaka Jumput, a herbs seeker, walking under the tree heard the scream. Then Jaka Jumput helped him go down from the tall tree. Jaka Jumput asked why Jaka Taruna could be entangled on the tree branch. Pangeran Jaka Taruna told about everything happened before.
“If only I could defeat a man named Pangeran Situbanda, what prize will you give me?” asked Jaka Jumput.
“Whatever you want, I will fulfil it, Jaka Jumput!” said Pangeran Jaka Taruna. Jaka Jumput was pleased to chase Pangeran Situbanda away.
As they met, Jaka Jumput challanged Pangeran Situbanda to fight. Feeling bothered, Pangeran Situbanda got furious. Jaka Jumput’s supernatural power was higher than Pangeran Situbanda’s. Pangeran Situbanda was cornered and fled to an area called Situbondo.
Pangeran Jaka Taruna beheld that Pangeran Situbanda was defeated and he soon ran  to Kadipaten Surabaya. Knowing that, Jaka Jumput followed Pangeran Jaka Taruna. Arriving in Kadipaten Surabaya, Pangeran Jaka Taruna reported that Pangeran Situbanda had been defeated by him.
Immediately Jaka Jumput came and refuted Pangeran Jaka Taruna’s explanation. “Your Majesty, I am the humble person who could defeat  Pangeran Situbondo, not him.” Said Jaka Jumput. Jaka Jumput showed a Pangeran Situbanda’s creese which he seized. Adipati Jayengrana trusted Jaka Jumput’s explanation.
“What proof will you show me that you could defeat Pangeran Situbanda, Pangeran Jaka Taruna.” asked Adipati Surabaya. Pangeran Jaka Taruna just kept silent. “But it was me who could defeat Pangeran Situbanda, Uncle Adipati Jayengrana.”said Jaka Taruna. “That village boy is just boasting.”
Adipati Jayengrana had an idea to pit Pangeran Jaka Taruna and Jaka Jumput. He said that whoever won the fight was the one who could defeat Pangeran Situbanda and deserve to marry his daughter.
Jaka Jumput and Pangeran Jaka Taruna fought each other fiercely. Pangeran Jaka Taruna could be defeated by Jaka Jumput with Gembolo Geni whip. Immediately Adipati Jayengrana asked Pangeran Jaka Taruna :”Are you lying that you have defeated Pangeran Situbanda?”
Pangeran Jaka Taruna just remain silent. Being cranky, Adipati Jayengrana said something in anger:” You always keep silent when I ask you like a statue.”
Suddenly Pangeran Jaka Taruna turned into  a statue. This statue is available until now and named Joko Dolog statue which can be found in front of the East Java Governor’s office.

 Story Telling
CALON ARANG

Long, long ago,  in the Kingdom of Daha, East Java, there lived a  ruthless widow. Her name was Calon Arang who lived in the village of Girah. Calon Arang was a black magic adherent who always spread evil things using witchcraft. She had a daughter named Ratna Manggali. Since her daughter had been grown-up and Calon Arang did not want Ratna Manggali to be a spinster, so she compelled some handsome and wealthy young men to be her son-in-law. Because of her cruel character, Calon Arang was disliked by the inhabitants of Girah village. There were no young men wanting to marry Ratna Manggali. It angered Calon Arang and she intended to create restlessness for Girah village’s inhabitants.
Muster your men! Find a young girl today! Before sunset, the young girl must be brought to the temple of Durga!” ordered Calon Arang to her man, Krakah. Shortly Krakah mobilized his men to find a girl. It was not a hard job for Calon Arang’s men.
Before the sun rose, a poor girl had been available in Durga temple. She was strugling to get loose. “Release me! Release me!” she cried. Being too tired of crying, the poor girl   fainted. Then she was laid down on an altar of sacrifice. In the middle of the night, Calon Arang sacrificed the young girl to Betari Durga, the goddess of fury.
Calon Arang was also angry, she cursed the people of Girah village with a heavy flood from Brantas river in East Java. Whoever was splashed by Brantas river water would die. “Ha...ha...ha...Who dare to challange Calon Arang? Calon Arang is undefeated!”  said Calon Arang.  Because of the curse, so many people suffered quite a lot. Victims become more in number. They got sick in the morning, and died in the afternoon. No medicine could overcome the strange pestilence.
“What makes my people in Girah village undergo such a pestilence and disaster?” asked Prabu Erlangga to his chief minister. After listening to the chief minister’s explanation about Calon Arang’s stray manners, Prabu Erlangga got furious. A war sign was hit, the chief minister soon mobilized the chosen warriors. They went to Girah village to capture Calon Arang. The warriors were proud and felt that the sacred duty would succeed owing to the all Daha people’s prayers.
The Daha kingdom’s warriors arrived in Calon Arang’s dwelling village. There were attacked before they took a rest. The warriors were shocked by rumbling explosions around them. Many Daha warriors suddenly floundered on the ground without certain causes.
The victims from Daha warrior side increased every second. Their enemies could defeat the opponents from a long distance without weapons. The defeat of Daha warriors in the battle made Calon Arang’s disciples more brutal. “Attack! Keep attacking!” screamed the disciples. The Daha warriors ran helter skelter to save their lives. Prabu Erlangga tried to find ways to defeat Calon Arang. To defeat Calon Arang, we have to show affection to her.”said Empu Barada in a Kingdom meeting. “Calon Arang’s vexation was due to nobody’s willingness to marry her only daughter.”
Empu Barada asked Empu Bahula to help him to overcome Calon Arang’s ferocity. Empu Bahula who was still single was appealed to marry Ratna Manggali. He was told that by marrying Ratna Manggali, he could deepen and complete his magic.
At last, the Empu Bahula’s entourage left for Girah village to persuade Ratna Mangali. “He...he...he... I am very glad to have a handsome son-in-law.” chuckled Calon Arang. Then a seven-day big wedding party was held in days and nights. The on-going merrymaking delighted Calon Arang. Ratna Manggali and Empu Bahula were also excited. Both of them loved each other very much. The wedding party had passed, but the cheerful atmosphere was still pervading Girah village. Empu Bahula used the situation to carry out his duty.
One day, Empu Bahula asked his wife.”My dear, Ratna Manggali. What makes your mother have formidable supernatural power? Ratna Manggali explained that the supernatural power owned by her mother lied on a Magic book. From the teachings in the book, she could invite Betari Durga. The Magic book could not be easily grabbed from Calon Arang’s hands, even when she slept. The Magic book was always used as a pillow under her head.
Shortly Empu Bahula arranged a strategy to steal the Magic book. In the middle of the night, Empu Bahula sneaked in the Calon Arang’s bedroom. Apparently, Calon Arang was sleeping soundly because she spent seven days for the lavish party. Empu Bahula could steal the Magic book and submitted it to Empu Baradah directly. After that, Empu Bahula and his wife soon fled.
Calon Arang was furios when knowing that her Magic book was not available anymore. She was like a rhinocheros in a frightening rage. Meanwhile, Empu baradah was learning the Magic book intensively. Being ready, Empu Baradah challanged Calon Arang. When facing Empu Baradah, Calon Arang spouted flames from both of her hands and eyes. Empu Baradah faced her calmly. He chanted incantations to turn back the spout of flames to Calon Arang’s body. Since the Magic book was not in her hands, Calon Arang’s body was wrecked into ashes and washed away by the wind to the south seas. At last, Girah village became peaceful as it was.
