Story Telling

LUTUNG KASARUNG

Once upon a time in Pasundan land (West Java), there was a kingdom ruled by a wise king well-known as Prabu Tapak Agung. Prabu Tapak Agung had two beautiful daughters namely Purbararang and Purbasari.
On Prabu Tapak Agung’s last legs, he choosed Purbasari-his youngest daughter- as his successor. “I am too old, it is time for me to abdicate.” Said Prabu. Purbararang did not agree her sister to succeed to her father’s throne. “ I am his eldest daughter, Father should choose me as his successor.” grumbled Purbararang to her fiancě – Indrajaya. Her indignation culminated and drove her to harm Purbasari. She met a witch woman to cast a spell to Purbasari. The witch affected Purbasari’s white skin to suffer from black spots. Therefore Purbararang had a reason to cast Purbasari out from the palace. “A woman who is cursed like her is not feasible to become a queen.” Said Purbarang.
She ordered a chief minister to alienate Purbasari to a jungle. Soon after they reached the jungle, the kind chief minister made Purbasari a hut. She advised purbasari “Be patient Princess. Temptations will be surely gone. God the Almighty will always be with you, Princess.” Thank you so much uncle.” Said Purbasari.
As long as Purbasari’s life in the jungle, she had a lot of animal friends which were always kind to her. Among the animals, there was a mysterious black monkey. However the monkey always cared about Purbasari. Lutung Kasarung always cheered her up by picking beautiful flowers and fruits with his friends.
At full moon, Lutung Kasarung usually did strange things. He walked to a quiet place to meditate. He asked for something from God. It proved that Lutung Kasarung was not a common creature. After a while, the ground beside Lutung cracked and formed a small lake and the water  was very clear and fragrant.
The next day Lutung Kasarung met Purbasari and asked her to take a bath in the lake. “What is that for?” thought Purbasari. Nevertheless she did it accordingly. A short time later, something happened to her skin. Her skin turned into clear white and her beauty reappeared. Purbasari was surprised to see and glad when she saw her face in the water of the lake.
At the palace, Purbararang decided to see her daughter in the jungle. She went there with her fiancě and guardians. Arriving at the jungle, she met and stared at her sister. Purbararang did not believe to see her sister gaining her beauty back. Purbararang did not want to be embarrased, she challanged Purbasari to measure the length of each hair. “One of us who has the longest hair will win.” said Purbararang. At the beginning, Purbasari was not willing, but because she was forced to show her hair. She proved that her hair was longer than Purbararang’s.
“Well, I am losing to you, but now let’s see whose fiancě is handsome. This is my fiancě,” said Purbararang while approaching Indrajaya. Purbasari was getting nervous and confused. In her nerves, she peeped and pulled Lutung Kasarung’s hand. Lutung Kasarung sommersoulted in happiness as if he won Purbasari. Purbararang burst out laughing and said.” So this monkey is your fiancě, right?
At that moment, Lutung Kasarung soon meditated. Suddenly a miracle bobbed up. Lutung Kasarung turned into a very handsome man more than Indrajaya. Every body was surprised to see the occurance. At last Purbararang admitted defeat and her previous mistakes. She apologized to Purbasari and begged her sister not to punish her. The kindhearted Purbasari forgave them. Then they returned to the palace.
Purbasari became the Queen, accompanied by a handsome young man. The young man who all the time protected her in the jungle as a black monkey.

Story Telling

JOKO DOLOG

One day, Pangeran (Pangeran) Situbondo, the son of Adipati (Duke) Cakraningrat of Madura, with his two guardians named Gajah Seta and Gajah Menggala sailed to Kadipaten Surabaya. He was welcomed by Adipati Jayengrana.
“Excuse me, Pangeran Situbanda. Why do you intend to visit Surabaya?” asked Adipati Jayengrana to Pangeran Situbanda.
“I am sorry, uncle. The purpose of my visit here is to express my long pent-up wish.”
“What wish is that, Pangeran?”
“It’s been a long time I have a wish to propose marriage to Purbawati, Uncle.”
After listening to Pangeran Situbanda’s explanation,  Adipati Jayanegara could not make a decision himself.. Then Adipati invited her daughter, Dewi Purbawati. He told her what Pangeran Situbanda wished.
Actually, Dewi Purbawati disliked Pangeran from Madura. There was no other way for Dewi Purbawati, except refusing it euphemistically. Then Dewi Purbawati made a request which was a form of subtle refusal to Pangeran Situbanda’s wish. She wanted Pangeran Situbanda to clear Surabaya jungle into a campong for their children and grandchildren if he wanted to marry her. Pangeran Situbanda promised to fulfil it though it was not an easy job.
In Kadipaten Surabaya, there was a guest from Kadipaten Kediri that was Pangeran Jaka Taruna. Because it was a past childhood habit for Pangeran Jaka Taruna to play in Kadipaten Surabaya, he soon went to the Dewi Purbawati’s house. Between Dewi Purbawati and Pangeran Jaka Taruna, there was long lasting love.
In the keputren park,  Pangeran Jaka Taruna saw Dewi Purbawati, his sweetheart, daydreaming. Knowing that Pangeran Jaka Taruna was coming, Dewi Purbawati cried before Pangeran Jaka Taruna. Dewi Purbawati asked Pangeran Jaka Taruna why he did not propose to marry her because Pangeran Situbanda had told about it to her father. Dewi Purbawati also explained that she announced a “Clearing the jungle contest”. She told that whoever was able to clear Surabaya jungle would marry her.  He decided to join the contest to prove his love to Dewi Purbawati as well as his magic power.
In Surabaya Jungle, Pangeran Situbanda was taking a rest from chopping trees. Suddenly he heard a voice of a man cutting trees from a distance. He immediately looked for where the voice came from. Apparently, the man cutting the trees was Pangeran Jaka Taruna, the son of Adipati Kediri. Pangeran Situbanda asked why Pangeran Jaka Taruna followed him to cut the trees.
Pangeran Jaka Taruna said that he also joined the contest required by Dewi Purbawati. Pangeran Situbanda was angry and ordered Pangeran Jaka Taruna to go home. At last, those two pangerans fought fiercely against each other for the sake of winning Dewi Purbawati. In the fight, Pangeran Jaka Taruna was thrown upward and entangled on a branch of a very tall tree.
Pangeran Jaka Taruna screamed to ask for a help. Pangeran Situbanda left Pangeran Jaka Taruna alone. A young man named Jaka Jumput, a herbs seeker, walking under the tree heard the scream. Then Jaka Jumput helped him go down from the tall tree. Jaka Jumput asked why Jaka Taruna could be entangled on the tree branch. Pangeran Jaka Taruna told about everything happened before.
“If only I could defeat a man named Pangeran Situbanda, what prize will you give me?” asked Jaka Jumput.
“Whatever you want, I will fulfil it, Jaka Jumput!” said Pangeran Jaka Taruna. Jaka Jumput was pleased to chase Pangeran Situbanda away.
As they met, Jaka Jumput challanged Pangeran Situbanda to fight. Feeling bothered, Pangeran Situbanda got furious. Jaka Jumput’s supernatural power was higher than Pangeran Situbanda’s. Pangeran Situbanda was cornered and fled to an area called Situbondo.
Pangeran Jaka Taruna beheld that Pangeran Situbanda was defeated and he soon ran  to Kadipaten Surabaya. Knowing that, Jaka Jumput followed Pangeran Jaka Taruna. Arriving in Kadipaten Surabaya, Pangeran Jaka Taruna reported that Pangeran Situbanda had been defeated by him.
Immediately Jaka Jumput came and refuted Pangeran Jaka Taruna’s explanation. “Your Majesty, I am the humble person who could defeat  Pangeran Situbondo, not him.” Said Jaka Jumput. Jaka Jumput showed a Pangeran Situbanda’s creese which he seized. Adipati Jayengrana trusted Jaka Jumput’s explanation.
“What proof will you show me that you could defeat Pangeran Situbanda, Pangeran Jaka Taruna.” asked Adipati Surabaya. Pangeran Jaka Taruna just kept silent. “But it was me who could defeat Pangeran Situbanda, Uncle Adipati Jayengrana.”said Jaka Taruna. “That village boy is just boasting.”
Adipati Jayengrana had an idea to pit Pangeran Jaka Taruna and Jaka Jumput. He said that whoever won the fight was the one who could defeat Pangeran Situbanda and deserve to marry his daughter.
Jaka Jumput and Pangeran Jaka Taruna fought each other fiercely. Pangeran Jaka Taruna could be defeated by Jaka Jumput with Gembolo Geni whip. Immediately Adipati Jayengrana asked Pangeran Jaka Taruna :”Are you lying that you have defeated Pangeran Situbanda?”
Pangeran Jaka Taruna just remain silent. Being cranky, Adipati Jayengrana said something in anger:” You always keep silent when I ask you like a statue.”
Suddenly Pangeran Jaka Taruna turned into  a statue. This statue is available until now and named Joko Dolog statue which can be found in front of the East Java Governor’s office.
